The city of Münster
The firs t thing visitors notice when coming to Münster are the many students living there. Of the 270.000 residents, over 50.000 are students. Münster's reputation as a college town is mostly due to the "Westphalian Willhelms-Universität" founded in 1780. It is Germany's third largest university and also hosts ELSA Münster e.V.
Münster and its bicycles

The bicycle has a special meaning for people living in Münster. This is partly because most students cannot afford a car. But also because the bicycle has proven to be a very reliable means of transportation: to get to your destination in Münster it is much safer and faster to go by bike. The protection of the environment is an important reason for not using the car everytime as well. Since the city is very old, the streets were designed for carriages not for automobiles. Therefore, the streets are narrow and there is not much parking space. It often takes people longer to find a place to park than it took them to get to their destination.
Cultural Münster
Münster of fers a diverse culture. The historic city centre is especially beautiful and reminds of Münster's time as hanseatic city. Münster is the catholic stronghold of the Westphalian region. Thus numerous churches mark the city's skyline.
Over the past years, the harbour has lost its economic influence. But this has proven to be a stroke of luck for the creative milieu. Around the harbour many artists and musicians have setteled and "hole-in-the-wall" pubs can be found everywhere.
Awards
Münster is proud to have been noted for its high standard of living. In 2004, Münster won the LivCom-Award as the most liveable community in its category. The European Energy Award in Gold has been awarded in 2005 and in 2006 Münster was named the climate capital of Germany.
