Due to the draft constitution’s failure, Europe’s future is now more open than ever. The Lisbon Treaty is as much subject to debate as the proper approach to the financial and economic crisis. Questions regarding the European Law’s influence on the economic market remain unsolved and a harmonization of national legal systems has not taken place. While some strive to promote integration and enlargement, others seem to distance themselves from the EU. The Union will have to strike a balance between its member states’ wish for sovereignty and the necessity of a unified, supranational economic power. This conference is intended to analyze these problems from different angles (e.g. sociological, political or legal approaches).

Lectures and a panel discussion with practitioners and academics will allow the participants to gain a profound insight into the matter. In workshops they will develop possible approaches to their assigned problem.

Exclusive working language will be English.

Workshops

  • The European Economic Area: 27 Antagonists or one Global Player?
  • The Problem of the EU Enlargement (using the examples of Turkey and Croatia)
  • The Democratic Legitimation of the EU
